comradepenguinmonster: tedpicklez: comradepenguinmonster: tedpicklez: comradepenguinmonster: woodelf68: p-otterlock:why isn’t the tax included in the price ffs. what are you doing america Because sales tax is set by the individual states instead of being the same for the whole country. How is that relevant? Aren’t the prices set by the stores anyway? The store gets goods from a supplier for a price A, then sells it at a higher price B. Since the store sets price B, it’s they who have the responsibility to include sales tax in prices, regardless of where the supplier is from, and regardless of what price A was. I understand what you’re saying, but the percentage of sales tax is set by the state. Not the individual stores. So theoretically the price could be lower if politicians weren’t such greedy dirt bags That’s beside the point though: the stores know the percentage of sales tax, so they also know what the price with tax will be and can therefore put it on the label rather than make the customer do the work of calculating the amount of money leaving their hands.Politicians’ greed is irrelevant. The label should state the price with tax, no matter how high or low that tax is. The sales tax takes the percentage off of the total spent, not each individual item. Putting the price with sales tax on each item would be irrelevant. Isn’t taking a sales tax off of the whole the same as taking the sales tax off of each part?Say you buy three items: a can of corn, a can of beans, and a can of tomatoes. The prices without tax are thus: a can of corn is $6.0, a can of beans is $3.0, and a can of tomatoes is $1.0. The sales tax rate is 10%, just to make the maths easy.If you calculate the sales tax on the total $10.0, the total amount you spend is $10.0 × (1.10) = $11.0If you applied the sales tax to each item, it’s:Corn: $6.6Beans: $3.3Tomatoes: $1.1Add these together: $6.6 + $3.3 + $1.1 = $11.0, the same result. You’re literally preaching to the choir. I’m literally saying it’s pointless because it’s the same. Like why change a whole system with such a minute difference when you could just decrease sales tax all together? It isn’t the stores making the taxes so high -- source link
