Reposted from @nowthisnews The Native Counseling Services of Alberta (NCSA) is offering free wallet-sized cards to members of Indigenous and Black communities in Alberta, Canada, to help them invoke their rights and provide them with a statement to read aloud during a police stop. The card is a revamped edition that was created after Alberta banned ‘carding’ — where a police officer requests personal information from someone ‘without reasonable grounds.’ The NCSA says this tactic has disproportionately affected members of Alberta’s Indigenous and Black communities. Legislation has recently been introduced to formally ban carding and street checks. The NCSA says that while the card isn’t a solve-all for systemic racism, it offers a short script that can be read should someone be stopped in order to invoke their rights. ‘The goal of this card is to increase Indigenous individuals’ knowledge of their rights,’ according to a release from the NCSA, ‘and provide them with a statement to read out loud, if they wish to invoke their rights when stopped by police. The inside of the card lists one’s rights with the police in an effort to ensure those rights are upheld by the police.’ #antiracism #indigenousrights #blm #bipoc #policebrutality https://www.instagram.com/p/COL3rA0J1qrZ2H0pM7qNrSEbFK_t2Wi87-ro3s0/?igshid=ufeaz06e7xhd -- source link
