Seen here is a 1900 drawing of the Hooper Island Lighthouse located in the Chesapeake Bay, west of Middle Hooper Island in Maryland. The drawing depicts the internal dimensions of the house. The lighthouse was constructed in 1901 as caisson type lighthouse, or a lighthouse whose superstructure is placed on a concrete or metal caisson as demonstrated in the drawing. The tower is taller than other Maryland caisson lights because it has a watch room as well as a lantern on top of the tower. The lighthouse was automated in the early 1960s, after which the original fourth-order Fresnel lens was stolen in 1976. The lens was replaced with a solar power lamp. The structure was turned over to the United States Lighthouse Society in 2009 and the light remains active. Want to learn more about our holdings?
