ganymedesrocks: Born in 1957 in Tucson, Arizona, Raymond Pettibon (born Raymond Ginn), graduated with a degree in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1977. A Pen of All Work, a major solo exhibition of Pettibon’s work featuring more than seven hundred drawings from the 1960s to the present, was an excellent ‘Preface’ in 2017 for the important Daumier - Pettibon exhibition tha spanned from 1019 to 2020 in Tel Aviv, honouring the American artist by ranking him with one of the more legendary French draughtsman. Honoré Daumier (1808–1879) and Raymond Pettibon (*1957), two of the most haunting and critical draughtsmen in art history where set as a ‘Solo’ exhibition, as their work, the commentators act with satirical sharpness, and witty wit proved a mirror of their epochs, with Politics and Society, the Everyday and the Current, at the center of their respective work as artists. Honoré Daumier was a graphic artist, draughtsman and painter who, in his time became famous as a caricaturist. His political and social commentaries reached the entire population in the illustrated daily press, making him the most important chronicler of 19th-century France. The work of the American Raymond Pettibon is an equally radical contemporary testimony. With a sharp pen, he negotiates topics ranging from politics, religion, sports to literature and captures reality – the American promise of happiness and its nightmarish distortions – in a spotlight on paper. His text-image collages are characterized by biting humor and deep skepticism about the “American way of life” that defines politics and society in the United States: Pettibon plumbs his mirrored world of sharp black-and-white contrasts and broadly painted, shadowy figures mercilessly the abysses of being. The juxtaposition of Daumier and Pettibon reveals surprising similarities: critical thinking, precise drawing, the combination of word and writing, as well as boldness in form and content. The encounter of their haunting art enriches and complements the mutual view of the work of the other and allows the two outstanding artists to enter into a highly topical dialogue between then and now. Pettibon lives and works in New York. -- source link
