kivrin:paulinedorchester:California’s wine industry, which has been bruised by the recent wildfires, got a shot in the arm from World War II: American wine hadn’t been entirely respectable, but other sources of wine were cut off during this period. This 1943 advertisement from the Wine Advisory Board, San Francisco (found here), covers several bases in addition to promoting California wine: ways of making food rationing less onerous; the importance of maintaining interpersonal connections during a difficult time; and the issue of moderation in drinking. That information puts a whole new gloss on the advertisements for Petri Wine (from southern California) which peppered the episodes of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio program that was reissued on cassette tape in the early 1990s! -- source link
