sailorgojirarex1997: After missing out on the last one, I’m gonna be taking on Dinovember this year. This time around, I’m going to be going along with @awannabepaleoartist’s Dinovember Powerball challenge. For my (belated) first submission, here is a scene of Iguanodon bernissartensis engaged in intraspecific (same-species) combat. In this case, it’s two males fighting for mating rights, with one of the combatants playing dirty by goring his opponent with his thumb spike. In a lot of paleoart pieces featuring Iguanodon, its only ever shown using its iconic thumb spike to defend itself against predators. With this piece here, I wanted to kind of subvert that trope by having the thumb spike be used in battle with another member of the same species. It’s fairly reasonable to assume that Iguanodon and its close relative could’ve used their thumb spikes as offensive weapons in intraspecific combat as well as defensive weapon against predators. Also, I added bruise marks on their bodies made by the two dinosaurs ramming their heads and beaks into one another as an extra detail. -- source link
