Thomas Jefferson 1743 – 1826 Something they might not have taught you in elementary school, is that the third president of the United States was also an architect. The appeal of Neoclassicism at the time was due in part to the values with which it was associated— morality, idealism, patriotism, and civic virtue. it is not surprisingthat in the new American republic Jefferson spearheaded a movement to adopt the style as the national architectural style. He admired Palladio immensely and carefully read his Four Books of Architecture. He later studied 18th century French classical architecture and city planning. After a sojourn through Europe, he remodeled his own home in Virginia, Monticello, and moved on to design several other buildings including the Rotunda at The University of Virginia and the Virginia State Capitol Building. Other building designs from the era that were directly influenced by Jefferson are considered to be in Jeffersonian Style. (x) -- source link
