katherinehillierillustration:Mythology mermay day 17 : SELKIESelkies are human-seal shapeshifters from the folklore of the remote northern islands of Scotland. It was thought that people might accidentally marry male or female selkies when believing them to be human, only for them to disappear soon after. Female selkies could also be forced into marriage by stealing their seal skin, but as soon as they got it back, they’d return to the sea.Since baby seals are obviously one of the best things in the world, I thought it would be fun to draw a mother selkie with her selkie-baby in its seal form.The grey beach illustration is available as a print from my store, with many of my other mermay illustrations hereFeel free to join in with #mythologymermay2022 !
