ganymedesrocks: hadrian6: Apollo, at the Behest of Zeus, Restoring Hector to Health and Exhorting Him to Engage the Greeks in Combat. c.1790. attributed to Louis Jean Francois Lagrenee. French 1760-1833. pen and black ink, bistre wash, white gouache and graphite. http://hadrian6.tumblr.com No Matter who truly this magnificent Pen & Ink should be attributed to; one fact remains, which amounts to a case of mistaken identity. Originally, this work of beauty was attributed to Jacques Réattu, which actually regarding the exection date made better sense, since Jacques Réattu was indeed born in 1760 and, indeed, passed away in 1833. But, that we agree or not on the attribution, in the alternative that we owe the work to Louis Jean-François Lagrenée, the dates of his life need to be actualized accordingly. Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée was of an older generation of artists, being born, at least thirty-five years prior to Réattu, circa 1724/1725. Louis-Jean François Lagrenée died in 1805, having passed the age of eighty, which was very old, under the 18th century health and sanitary available care. @ganymedesrocks thanks @hadrian6 and @yesdevan15 for this post, advising both to change see the dates corrected by the attributions, which not all official art organisations have, due to the fact that attributions do not all reach consensus. -- source link
