purplepints:Reminder that many of the creators, artists, writers and generally the people responsible for the characters in comics today were- the first gen children of immigrants- Jewish and/or of ethnicities seen as Other - grew up in poverty- suffered discrimination- the OGs like Kirby joined the U.S. Military and participated in both background & actual battle in WWII.* Jack Kirby joined the US Army, served in the European Theatre - mostly in France- and was awarded a Bronze Star. * Stan Lee joined the US Army and was assigned to the Signal Corps to produced pamphlets & films for soldiers regarding safety (and hilariously, VD/STDs)* Dick Ayers served in the US Army Air Corps (now the US Air Force) during WWII as a radio operator on a bomber. [Ayers was a known artist, but is often noted as Kirby’s inker, which shouldn’t overshadow all of his own works.]* Alice Marble was recruited by the OSS during WWII to spy on bankers involved with Nazi businesses in Europe. She was shot during the assignment and had to be extracted, her participation kept secret until her death. [Marble was already known as a professional tennis player with multiple titles & Grand Slams during her career. Her husband was killed in WWII which led to the OSS recruiting her. Prior to her service in the OSS, she was the Editor of the original run of Wonder Woman and responsible for sending copies out to US Forces.]* Curt Swan was part of the National Guard when his unit was called up to serve in the European Theatre during WWII. [After seeing his skills once his unit arrived in Europe, the Army reassigned him to draw for Stars & Stripes, the military newspaper. He went on to have a record-setting run of pencilling for Superman.] ….. And that is just a sampling of the comic industry veterans, there are many more who served in Korea and Vietnam and today’s more recent conflicts. These guys who were around for the Golden and Silver Age of comics were more than happy to squash fascism and punch some fucking Nazis. Like Mr. Kirby says above, they’d be sickened by the use of these iconic images in modern-day Nazi hands. The comic industry and creators have come out and said fuck facists and Nazis and cultists misusing and misrepresenting what these characters and their creators were saying. If you’re a cop and wear a Punisher skull, fuck you. If you’re a fascist and you’re sporting a Captain American shirt, fuck you.I hope Kirby and the others are on standby to kick your ass in case of a resurrection or an afterlife. -- source link
