ralphsmotorbike: On January 1, 1947, Ralph Richardson’s knighthood was announced in the New Year’s Honors List. Our small Ralph fandom knows that I’ve been on the hunt for a photograph of Ralph and his wife at Buckingham Palace on the day he was knighted by King George VI. There are such photos of the other actor-knights on their investiture days, and I’ve posted them in the past–John Gielgud, Michael Redgrave, Alec Guinness, John Mills and their families, and of course Laurence Olivier with Vivien Leigh in June 1947. I’ve scoured British newspaper sites for large and small publications. And this is as close as I’m going to get.At the top is Ralph with his two-year-old son, Charles (”Smallie”), walking outside their Hampstead Heath house on January 2, 1947. This photo was posted awhile ago by my friend flammentanz. But it originally accompanied an article about the newly-knighted Sir Ralph. The other articles are from smaller English newspapers, culminating in the story on January 28, 1947, that the King had knighted “the Cheltenham-born actor” that day at the palace. BUT NO PICTURE! Given the rather negative reaction to the whole thing by his friend and Old Vic partner Laurence Olivier, Ralph may have tried to keep things low key, which would have certainly been consistent with his character. But the hunt will continue! -- source link
