letsgowild: Camel racing is a popular sport in Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Jordan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Australia, and Mongolia. A major camel race is the Camel Cup held at Alice Springs which is the second biggest prize purse camel race in Australia. The biggest prize money camel race in Australia is “The Boulia Desert Sands” with a A$25,000 prize purse in Queensland. Reportedly, camels can run at speeds up to 65 km/h (18 m/s; 40 mph) in short sprints, and they can maintain a speed of 40 km/h (11 m/s; 25 mph) for an hour. An estimated 10,000 to 12,000 camels, imported into Australia between 1860 and 1907, were used as draft and riding animals by people pioneering the dry interior of the Outback. They are perfectly suited to the Australian Outback environment. When motorized transportation replaced the need for working animals, camels were released in the wild, and Australia now has the biggest wild camel population in the world.
