Angel Island was an immigration station in San Francisco Bay where hundreds of thousands of immigrants - most of whom were Asian - were cruelly detained and interrogated for US entry or deportation. The station was used to block the flow of Chinese immigrants entering or returning to the US after the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act and other racist laws were passed. Detainment and interrogations were often drawn out for weeks or months due to racial discrimination. Some Chinese immigrants, known as paper sons and daughters, were able to overcome this racist immigration ban by presenting fake papers and memorizing personal info to claim that they were children of US citizens.Angel Island opened on January 1910 and closed in November 1940 when a large fire broke out due to poor safety and maintenance. Today, 200+ poems carved by detained Chinese immigrants have been preserved on the barracks walls of Angel Island. Read more about them and Angel Island here. -- source link
