First Constitution from the First University in the New WorldAntonio Ricardo was the first printer in South America. The first printing from his press in Lima, La Doctrina Christiana y Catecismo was published in 1584 and this Constituciones (the 12th printing from his press) in 1602. The university still exists today in Lima as the National University of San Marcos. North Americans frequently attribute the first publication in the New World to The Bay Psalms Book, published in Massachusetts in 1640, a century after the first publication in Mexico in 1539. -- source link
