2010′s Musical Thoughts #8- 35mm35mm was performed in concert Off-Broadway on March 7th, 2012 (with an encore performance on the 12th). With original music by Ryan Scott Oliver, this is a song cycle (where every song is a different story) with songs based on interpretations of the surreal photography of Matthew Murphy. The songs are very different in plot and tone. One is about a manny dealing with caring for a crazed young girl, one is about a woman who falls in love with a lonely vampire. One is about a woman who runs away from an abusive marriage, one is about a knight searching for his lost princess. One is about a newlywed couple who get in a car accident (resulting in one dying), one is about a psychotic prom queen who goes on a murderous rampage. Throughout all this variety is the central idea that photographs are captured moments in time, and are always out of context if you don’t know the people or weren’t in the picture. And very rarely do people care about what happened after a stranger’s photograph was taken. This is an insanely creative and experimental piece, and because every song is its own self contained story, you don’t need to look for a plot description of an overall show or hunt for a bootleg. The only thing you may need is the photographs the songs are based on (and those can be found easily online), but even then it just shows where the songs came from. Not seeing the photographs doesn’t hinder a person from understanding the stories and depth in each song. Sometimes the pictures don’t match up with the songs, but that’s not a bad thing. It just adds to the wonder of “how did they come up with this?” For example, the song “The Party Goes With You” is about a woman who feels like the party has left whenever her lover leaves her. The photograph the song is based on? Just a balloon salesman walking away. 35mm is a mad-cap, creative experiment in music that serves as a thoughtful meditation on the immortality of a photograph. -- source link
