When I first thought of this show for Artworks, Elena Chestnykh’s figurative paintings, especially those of women, really sunk in as the cornerstone of what I thought to be the curatorial theme I was working toward. In an early studio visit, I carried in my paintings to compare with Elens’s one-to-one. I knew then the curatorial theme would be successful. With additions of Gary Giordano and Buket Savci, the show was complete, displaying desperate styles of figurative painting. Elena’s work and approach to the figure is similar to mine in certain respects. For me, I am challenged to stop when the image appears or when I am happy with it. (Damien Loeb says he’s ‘done with a painting when he’s no longer embarrassed by it.’ Ha! Thats true!) Elena seems to know exactly when to stop and start the both the surface and the narrative for the figures in her works. See this exhibition, I think you’ll be intrigued by the paintings on view. http://artworkstrenton.org/distance-and-happiness-dreams-and-time/ #artworkstrenton #trentonartworks #garygiordanoptojects #buketsavci #elenachestnykh (at Artworks Trenton) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvxlobFFGFL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=i79hmt74n75p -- source link
