insertspockhere: startrekwreck: batfeathers: Okay so remember that post I made about Star Trek tribble math? http://batfeathers.tumblr.com/post/143661974179/geek-warning Long story short: I put together the math from the Trouble With Tribbles and wrote an exponential function using natural log or log base e modeling tribble birth rate (not necessarily valid for overall population growth because that should factor in death as well and we don’t have that info) And it turns out Spock was exactly right about his estimation of the number of tribbles in the storage compartment (duh) AND it’s particularly cool to mention this because back in the day (the 60′s) it wasn’t like everyone had calculators in their pockets. Someone on the show (Gene I’m looking at you) gave enough of a damn to make sure it was accurate. I’ve included a super scientific small graph and a computer calculated proof using my function. At t=72 there would indeed be 1,771,561 tribbles. The cool thing is, using this function you could find out the tribble birth rate at any given time after t=0 by plugging it in (in hours) for variable x. I love this. I just really love that Spock does this kind of stuff in his head. Instantly. Smart is sexy. -- source link
