Bracelet with a cameo of MedusaByzantine Empire, early Byzantine period, 5th-7th century ADGold, chalcedony, garnet, and green glass paste (modern) “This bold Byzantine bracelet features a carved stone cameo of Medusa, a snake-haired female monster from Greek mythology. In antiquity, raised-relief cameos and incised intaglios were worn with pride, given as gifts, handed down as heirlooms, and traded. Occasionally, artisans remounted them as jewelry, as with this bracelet. Here, a Roman cameo is set within an interlocking scroll design with garnets. The green areas were once enamel but have been replaced with glass paste.”Photo by Shelby NavoneEdited in VSCO CamObject and Description from The Boston Museum of Fine Arts -- source link
