swamp-world: doesthendnlive:jollycryptid: dreadpiratejojo: saxypunch: leftistluigi: doesthendnlive: I don’t know anything about Contrapoints. But I’m really tired of white Youtube personalities making anti-native racism a joke or a punchline and dismissing it. I’m also really tired of these same supposedly “progressive” people not acknowledging or apologizing for overstepping boundaries, participating in racism, and just turning a blind eye to it rather than try to do better. Like honestly it has been a pretty rough couple of months for Native people and then to have celebrities or Youtubers with massive platforms pull this disrespectful stunt without even thinking about the indigenous people on the same social media platform is pretty exhausting. And yes, that’s Jeff Barnaby, the man who created Rhymes For Young Ghouls. To my knowledge she hasn’t reached out to him either. Instead of immediately dismissing the issue, she should have looked at what POC (especially native people) were saying about it and tried to understand their point of view. I think this post does a good job at not directly attacking Natalie’s character, but using this tweet as an example of the harmful trends of white progressives. Natalie definitely needs to apologize, I’m with you there, but… I want to shut down some shit I’m seeing in the notes, though. People are using this as an excuse to jump all over her. This is bad for two reasons. The first is that it detracts from….the actual point of this post. This post isn’t specifically shitting on Natalie, it’s using her as an example of a bigger problem, as I said before. She just happened to be the name behind it. The second is that it devolves into baseless, terrible accusations against her (calling her a Nazi for one, jesus christ). Don’t judge Natalie from a goddamn tweet. Her videos are 30-40 minutes long. They are incredibly well thought out and coherent. Give ‘em a watch before you decide she’s cancelled forever over two sentences. I’m also seeing a lot of out of context screenshots and/or quotes from her videos. People are complaining about things that she has addressed in the body of the video. For example, people are complaining about her newest video, “Are Traps Gay?” They are saying she’s “using slurs for clickbait.” The thing is, she goes into great detail explaining why she chose that title. People complaining about this clearly did not watch it. TL;DR OP is making a great point about how dismissive white ppl are of native issues, even when they are “progressives.” It’s a good thing to scrutinize, and white people need to be cognizant of our immediate reactions to things like this (and not tweet them, lol). But don’t full on cancel Contrapoints before you watch her videos, and certainly don’t use this as an excuse to shit on her while ignoring the main point of this post. You sure wrote an awful lot of words here just to say “I assume the reason you disagree with me is because you’re ignorant”. It might be that people have watched the same videos you have and came to different conclusions! Conclusions that are less sympathetic! Possibly because Natalie Wynn’s own capacity for sympathy extends about an inch past her personal identity! Wow! Neat! they wrote that because op literally started with “I don’t know anything about contrapoints” lmao The outfit she uses is meant to make fun of Nazis (because fuck giving them any shred of legitimacy) and it’s a joke on how Nazis fetishise power nationalism. She doesn’t have a fucking Nazi fetish. It’s just a caricature to help make her explanation easier for people who’re new to social justice which is usually centrists or the uneducated etc. She specifically uses Hegelian dialects with her caricatures. It’s just a character made to make the explanation easier while making it entertaining using flashy dramatic costumes. If any of y'all actually watched any of the videos instead of taking screenshots out of content, you’d fucking know what your talking about. She’s got a PhD in Philosophy so she sticks to talking about Philosophy, general Sociology and the such but just because she hasn’t mentioned Anti-native racism doesn’t mean she’s dismissing it. That’s a huge reach. NOT ONCE DID SHE DISMISS NATIVES SUFFERING. Never in her videos, live streams or even tweets. Yes, the suffering indigenous people around the world faced and still face is horrible. It should be ignored or dismissed, but slandering ContraPoints wouldn’t do anyone any good folks. BE ANGRY AT THE REAL PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE WHO’S ACTUALLY GUILTY OF THIS SHIT & SAVE YOUR RAGE FOR THEM ! She dismissed Native suffering by mocking and making light of the John Wayne interview. I’ve addressed this here:https://doesthendnlive.tumblr.com/post/182980229318/doctor-freak-doesthendnlive-i-dont-knowIt would be lovely if non-natives would take a step back and not act like they’re entitled to tell us which forms of anti-native racism are more acceptable to be mad at. this is just wild to me. “she specifically uses Hegelian dialects [cit] with her caricatures” so like, yeah, her videos are dialectical in nature, but I wouldn’t argue that they’re inherently Hegelian, which is such a petty nitpick, but what I actually want to say is: She’s got a PhD in Philosophy so she sticks to talking about Philosophy, general Sociology and the such but just because she hasn’t mentioned Anti-native racism doesn’t mean she’s dismissing it. That’s a huge reach. Even if she “sticks to talking about Philosophy” that’s a pretty thin justification. A PhD in philosophy doesn’t mean that you’re right about everything, but if you get a fucking PhD in philosophy without considering the active philosophies of racism, and philosophies of people of colour, Indigenous philosophies, decolonial and anti-colonial philosophy, etc., and giving them as much merit as you would give the European canon; or, if you are encountering them and studying them but not acknowledging their merits enough to act on them, then I really…don’t give a shit. Philosophy is not divorced from Indigenous rights, and suffering, and respect. It is actively integrated with it. It is inseparable from Indigenous rights, dignity, and sovereignty. [something something Hegel’s ideas in Introduction to the Philosophy of History; maybe i’ll fill this in later; tldr is that it’s :///]Also, you can like. You can enact a dialectic, Hegelian or Platonic or otherwise, without, you know, dressing up as a Nazi, even for exaggerated or satirical purposes. Maybe it makes it “more accessible” somehow to centrist or rightist/alt-right/alt-lite audiences. It also definitely makes it way less accessible to audiences who were and are persecuted by Nazis. It seems a bit, how do you say, Fucked Up, to me, to say “go watch her whole videos before you make criticism” when it’s perfectly understandable that people might not want to watch someone act out Nazi rhetoric, while wearing Nazi symbols and style, just to argue their point. If someone doesn’t want to watch 40 minutes of that, that in and of itself is a perfectly valid critique of her work. BE ANGRY AT THE REAL PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE WHO’S ACTUALLY GUILTY OF THIS SHIT & SAVE YOUR RAGE FOR THEM ! Natalie Wynn is, as far as I know, still the most popular leftist video essayist on YouTube. White leftists are frequently racist, frequently antisemitic, frequently anti-Indigenous, so casually day to day. White leftists use their other leftist beliefs as a shield against criticisms of racism, as well as the whole “well we’re not as bad as those other guys! [points at nazis]”. But If that is left unchecked, and this is the kind of rhetoric we let slide, then we’re just trying to replace capitalist racism with communist racism. -- source link
