People in Islam: Malcolm Lateef Shabazz/El Hajj Malik, grandson of Malcolm X Little Malcolm is the grandson and first male descendant of the thoroughly esteemed and well known Malcolm X, who’s personality resonates in the hearts of millions of people across the world even today, both Muslim and Non Muslim. Malcolm was born in 1984 to an Algerian father and his mother Qubilah, second daughter of Malcolm X. By ethnicity, Malcolm is half Arab Berber and half Black. Malcolm X always wanted a son but was destined to have 6 amazing daughters but sadly, would never remain alive to meet his first male heir and share that father - son bond with. Much like Elder Malcolm, Little Malcolm began his life in a similar situation to his grandfather, not off to a good start. His grandmother and widow of Malcolm X was killed in a fire Little Malcolm himself started in a terrible accident at only 12 years old. A stain which has plagued him until this day. But despite his difficult start in life, Malcolm knows he has huge boots to fill and after serving lengthy prison sentences, began his life anew. He hired a private tutor but due to unprecedent, or more accurately, racist circumstances, could not attend higher education as soon as his studies had finished and had to serve an undeserved extra year in jail. What seemed to be a curse of being denied entry into higher education, Malcolm remained firm in his belief in Allah and destiny. As soon as he found himself in jail, he began to learn more and more about Islam, trading books and getting hold of more literature in what seemed to be an almost underground manner. In the end, Malcolm found that the best way to bring himself closer to God was to take the path of Islam laid out by the ahlul bayt, becoming a Shia Muslim, which he remains firmly upon until this day. Malcolm strongly encouraged in an interview that people should go to hajj as soon as they can, regardless of their age. He spoke of what an amazing experience hajj yet how difficult it was, both physically and mentally. Like his grandfather, he was granted the opportunity to meet many of the famous personalities attending hajj. Malcolm stresses something very important however - he does not want to be seen the same way as his grandfather was. He strongly believes that he has his own personal journey, his own personal path to take. He speaks extremely highly of his grandfather but Malcolm emphasises that in the end, he is his ownself that must pave his own way. Like his grandfather, Malcolm continues to speak publicly in universities, all types of different events and in high schools, emphasising upon points such as Islamic unity and focusing on youth. He is currently studying at the John Jay College of criminal justice and is the father of a girl called Ilyasah. -- source link
