uwmspeccoll: Wood Engraving WednesdayDAVID GENTLEMAN English artist, designer, and illustrator David Gentleman (b. 1930) studied wood engraving at the Royal College of Art under John Nash, one of the ten founders of the Society of Wood Engravers. Gentleman has illustrated numerous publications with his wood engravings, including 32 covers for the New Penguin Shakespeare series, several children’s books, and four titles by the Limited Editions Club (LEC).We hold all four LEC publications illustrated by Gentleman, and today we present some of his wood engravings from the 1963 LEC production of The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss, designed by Will Carter (1912-2001), proprietor of the Rampant Lions Press, and printed in Ipswich, England by W.S. Cowell Ltd in an edition of 1500 copies signed by the artist on paper made specially for the edition by Grosvenor, Chater & Co. Ltd. Gentleman created thirty-one, full-page, two-color wood engravings, as well as about three dozen smaller black-and-white wood engravings and an wood-engraved map for the endpapers of the edition.The black and white wood engraving of the donkey is included here especially for our former lead graduate intern Alison.
