The entertainment industry, the fashion industry, and corporations tell women (and men also, it’s not exclusive) that youth is the only thing that’s valid. I don’t like being told that I can’t do something because I’m a fucking certain age or because I don’t meet a certain demographic. Fuck that shit — it actually pisses me off.  This life isn’t easy: it’s a lot of work. I worked my ass off (and the majority of the people in this world do), so for anyone outside of me to dictate how I should do anything can suck it. I’ve been sober since March 11th, 1996. If I’m still living the next March 11th, I’ll have 20 years. A big part of addiction is trying to blame it on somebody else. Your pain is someone else’s problems. I started drinking when I was 11 or 12, taking sips of beer from my mom and dad. I just went on and on. I used to get up in the morning and cocktail. Midday, I would cop dope. Evening, I would cop dope. I was shooting so many drugs that my heart and circulation were going. It was either stop or die. I was laying on a bed, married to another drug addict. and I couldn’t move. I was looking up at the ceiling and it just happened. Everybody’s got their bottom and I found mine. I saw a window of opportunity and I made a decision to go through it. Once you decide, the willpower comes. It’s not the other way around. There’s no power without decision. You want to make a big change you have to make big actions. Instead of getting up in the morning and make a cocktail, I wrote. Instead of copping dope midday, I exercised, and instead of copping dope in the evening, I practiced with my band. I flipped my shit around. When I was addicted to heroin, I didn’t own who I was.
