I’m offhandedly watching this show out of morbid curiosity, but this episode had me thinking. So the funny thing about this scene is no one got angry Kokoro got called disgusting(pfft) and Ikuno only got up because she got personally offended about Nine Alpha calling gender a pain. But she agrees it’s a pain–so she’s saying it’s fine that it hurts? What’s the message here? It’s a pain, but we need to deal with it for the betterment of society? Why does it hurt her? Is she upset because of her feelings of love towards Ichigo? But without gender boundaries, wouldn’t she feel less restricted, considering these feelings? Or could the show be taking a perspective that due to her being lesbian, this sort of thing would erase her internal struggle in a society that enforces heterosexuality(at least in regard to piloting which is supposed to be their reason to live). But first of all even if Ichigo does not return her feelings, would Ikuno’s friends reject her? When they have little understanding of sexuality and don’t seem to have much prejudice? The show just tacks on someone who does not confirm to the heteronormative norm that permeates it but never really explores her. Considering the Boys vs Girls episode where the resolution was basically “girls are enigmas and need to put up with boy’s perviness, we’ll never understand each other” maybe darling doesn’t have a nuanced answer here. So obviously it’s sacrilege if the woman isn’t assuming her role of pumping out babies. Not conforming to traditional gender roles, how awful. Kokoro claims having a baby in a weird society that experiments on children is the only way for a girl to leave a mark on the future, which is pretty disturbing, cause your kid is definitely going to suffer and you have no idea how to take care of one because you yourself are just a kid. It’s actually selfish to make a kid solely as evidence of your existence and also use someone just to satisfy that desire. 02 being unable to have one is supposed to be sad. But she’ll probably be able to have one with Hiro since he’s growing horns anyway, so “crisis” averted. If you are sterile or otherwise unable to have kids it doesn’t make someone less of a human or a failure. Then the whole thing about Nines not having emotions when they clearly do feel amusement/disgust/curiosity etc. How much of this is really the Nines’ opinions and how much is brainwash? Perhaps the characters ignorant perspectives are not the by all end all of the show’s message, but even if it is this show is at least an interesting dive into weird conservative values. -- source link
