gffa: gffa: –Darth Vader #5ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? I HAVE TO SUFFER THIS WAY?? Vader takes the kyber crystal he’s just won to Mustafar, to corrupt it and master it, so that he’ll be truly Sith. That that’s what this entire storyline has been about from the beginning, to close every door to the way back from all this. When the crystal shows him a vision, it’s a moment of Anakin Skywalker doing the right thing, it’s a moment of realizing what he’s done, killing Sidious, finding Obi-Wan and begging for his former Master to help him. A moment where Obi-Wan realizes he’s still Anakin. This is what Vader has to overcome, that the crystal he’s forcing a connection with is showing him what some part of him still wants, that he WANTS to kill Sidious, that he WANTS to kneel before Obi-Wan and beg for either death or forgiveness, to be recognized as Anakin Skywalker. And that is what Vader has to crush to continue on this path. That is what Vader crushes. Every memory the crystal throws at him, he only screams and clamps down harder, he refuses to back down, he’s already lost, he can’t go back, the only way out is through.AND I ASKED FOR NONE OF THIS PAIN, JFC. thewillowbends replied: I like the idea of it, albeit, I dislike the implication of him being able to defeat Palpatine because the whole point of the suit is that he no longer CAN. Albeit, that’s easier visual symbolism than turning himself in to the rebels and giving them means to destroy Palpatine. That’s a really interesting thought! There’s two ways to address this–what’s going on in the comic VERSUS the potential of what questions this brings up.WHAT’S GOING ON IN THIS COMIC: The kyber crystal isn’t showing him isn’t necessarily an accurate vision, because we see Obi-Wan is very clearly not on Tatooine. This is about Anakin and the path he’s choosing, rather than what’s actually happening around him, what potential he still has left to him. He could go fight Palpatine or he could join some of the other Jedi in exile, he could find Obi-Wan wherever he was and beg for forgiveness/help/death, the specifics don’t matter, it’s about the path he (isn’t) choosing.I’ll allow it because the emotional beat of it–and, since this is Anakin’s vision and Vader also just said in issue #2, “I have no limits!”, that’s how he sees himself–is spot on, that he thinks he could destroy the Emperor, but that that path isn’t open to him. “No. This is all there is.” isn’t about that he can’t do it, but that he won’t do it. He doesn’t want to be the Emperor, not without Padme there, not without someone to rule with him. He just wants to murder things and maybe die in the process, he doesn’t want to move up the ranks or admit to his giant fuck up.THE POTENTIAL OF WHAT QUESTIONS THIS BRINGS UP: This post doesn’t show the panels of Vader going to fight/kill Palpatine, who does fight back, so it’s not like he caught him by surprise. George Lucas did say in 2005 that Vader was less powerful because of the suit (I think it was that his arms + legs were gone, so the midi-chlorians in those limbs were gone, which made him less powerful), that before he was twice as good as the Emperor but now he’s 20% less powerful. The above isn’t really about how things would accurately go, so it’s entirely possible that, within this universe, Vader would have gone to kill Sidious and wound up really, really dead for it, because Palpatine is now more powerful than him. Because, even without the midi-chlorian stuff, I think the bigger issue is the combination of Vader’s lack of desire to overthrow Palpatine + that he’s lesser than what he was. Yes, he’s unleashed in a way Anakin was holding back, we see so much more death and violence from Vader, because he’s not being careful anymore, he’s just murdering his way through everything. But ultimately the point is that he has nothing, he’s building towards nothing, he’s empty, alone, and miserable. The suit is the symbol of that–he may have the freedom to murder more people now, but it’s not going to bring him anything good. He might be more badass now, but he’s miserable and wants to die because of what it took to get there.Thinking about it, I don’t see this vision as a conflict with how he’d die in a fight against Sidious, he’s just not quite willing to face that part of himself so actively. Who knows, maybe underneath this vision it’s telling him, “Go, face Sidious, try to kill him, because you’ll die in the attempt, no matter what you think of yourself, and you know you want that.” but he can’t admit that because the dark side has to have made him the most powerful ever or his justifications for it will unwravel. That it’s half the crystal shoving this vision into his head and half Anakin tapping into and connecting with the crystal in a semi-harmonic way (instead of forcing himself on it, as he does a minute later) and interpreting its possibilities through the structure he’s willing to admit to–ie, he wouldn’t think it’s possible that he could die in a fight against Sidious, so it shows him winning that fight, even when underneath it, they both know he’d die. -- source link
