supersonicart: Ichiro Tsuruta’s “Bijin-ga” at Onishi Gallery. Currently on view at Onishi Gallery in New York City is artist Ichiro Tsuruta’s solo exhibition, “Bijin-ga.” Influenced by Toshimitsu Imai, an influential 20th century avant-garde Japanese artist, Tsuruta turned his eyes, which had been focused overseas up to that point, back to Japan in establishing his own, new style. After trial-and-error based on the idea, “Can’t I unite Japanese things like ukiyo-e with Art Nouveau and Art Deco of the West,” what he hit on was his bijin-ga paintings of beautiful women. Thus he converted from the Western-style realism, which involves drawing with an adept technique in order to look like a photograph, into producing delicate and symbolic Japanese-style portraits. The exhibition will be on view until May 11th, 2019. Be sure to follow Supersonic Art on Instagram! -- source link
