i-draws-dinosaurs:inthefallofasparrow:omghotmemes: Not an attack on my American friends, but only stating the quality I, however, don’t have any American friends, and so, absolutely intend this reblog as an attack. Take that, Soggybills! The new Australian notes from the last five years or so have transparent strips through them! they’re very pretty Sorry, back the fuck up because almost every word of this is wrong: - American bills are not made out of paper. They’re made out of pressed cotton and linen cloth fibers. They do not dissolve in the wash and in fact if you leave one in your pocket on accident it will typically come out looking better. They’re pretty difficult to destroy on accident, but if you do manage to tear one, any bank will generally replace it if you can give them enough pieces to constitute more than half the original note.- I’m really fucking confused about when this meme was made: it uses a format that is only a few years old, but for a good decade now US bills have had distinct, colorful designs: Yes the $1 and $2 are still similar, but the $2 is so rarely used that unless you are one of those weird motherfuckers who gets entire stacks of $2s just to pay for everything with them because It’s Eccentric™, this will pretty much never be a problem for you. It’s arguable that the bills should be multi-sized like Euros and pound sterling to make them more accessible to the blind but this doesn’t appear to be a feature of Australian banknotes either, so it’s not like you win the comparison on that point.- These new designs also include many elements that make counterfeiting difficult, particularly on the high denomination bills. Anti-counterfeit features in US currency include but are not limited to:The material of the dollar itself. Because - again - it’s not paper, it has a very distinct feel and a lot of experienced cashiers and tellers will know they have a fake as soon as they touch one. It also includes tiny red and blue fibers which make it even more challenging to duplicate.Watermarks visible when the bill is held to the lightEURion constellation (standard feature on almost all global currencies, disables photocopiers and scanners when they detect it)Reflective and holographic elements in the bill designEmbossed/tactile patternsFeatures that change color under UV lightDesigns are updated about once a decade and the older bills that the counterfeiters have figured out are withdrawn from circulation when they are deposited to banksEven the older bills from before the latest redesign included many of these features. I am sure that many people are nonetheless still attempting to counterfeit US currency. This is because 330 million people live in this country (compared to Australia’s 26 million which is not even 1/10 as many), we have the world’s largest economy, the dollar is a global reserve currency, and it is accepted in many places even outside the US because it has a more stable value than the local currency. There’s just a higher demand for USD in general so the incentive to try is also higher. It doesn’t mean it’s easier; it just means people are more likely to devote the necessary time to it if it’s not easy.@omghotmemes @inthefallofasparrow try doing a little research before you go around throwing out misinformation as rudely as you possibly can. -- source link
