On the Aztec Gods Proyect, a bit of history. pt.1I’ve always been a history fan, It’s a subject I just can’t get enough about, the people, their stories, struggles, and everything around them. Being Mexican my first encounter with history and mythology was Mexican and mesoamerican history, and just like many mexican artists I ended up drawing about Aztecs and mixing it with whatever I found cool at the time. That’s where the idea of drawing a bunch of Aztec deities first came around for me, about 10 years ago I drew the first set of Aztec illustrations, and due to my interest in history, found myself eating up every book and research papers I could find about it (sometimes I think I would have made a decent archaeologist). However I found out really how toxic the whole “mesoamerican fan” community can be, or rather the amount of denial of history and blantant revisionism there was around abound the subject, my history focus clashed with all the revisionism and it ended up causing me to burnout on the subject. I decided to forget about drawing anything mesoamerican and focus on honing my artistics skills overall. (however I never stopped reading about the subject)Fast forward a decade and here I am, back at the drawing table for the Aztecs Gods, I’m much more comftable now coupling historical references with art, and I just don’t see a lot of mythological art about the subject that I like, so, like they say, if it doesn’t exist do it yourself. Now the revisionism is even greater thanks to social media being everywhere, and I come across crazy stuff like mesoamerican never sacrificing anyone, and the Aztec warriors conquering peoples through what I can only call “virtuous ascended energy”, its new age everywhere. I’m not going to lie, it pisses me off a little.Fortunately, I’ve also seen a lot of shared interest on history and mythology that really helps me keep this proyect going and avoid the burnout. These 6 illustrations are part of the original batch that are not going to be part of the new proyect, they are simply to old, to different and they don’t really accomplish what I want from the proyect, however I figured I’d put them up here together, they were on my old DeviantArt account which I deleted I while ago.Anyway, about the New and revised Aztec Gods proyect I’ll go into detail what it consists off, how many gods etc on the second part. -- source link
