#AkbarsTomb is the tomb of the Mughal emperor Akbar. It was built in 1605–1613 by his son Jahangir and is situated in 119 acres of grounds in Sikandra, a sub of #Agra, #UttarPradesh, India. #Akbar started the construction of his final resting place while he was alive as was the tradition. After his death in 1605, Jahangir took over the project and completed it with his desired modifications by 1613. The complex is spread over a vast region of 119 acres with sprawling gardens (char bagh), and water streams, fountains all enclosed within high sandstone walls with four massive gates as openings. The main building holding the cenotaph is built entirely in red sandstone with highlights and decorations done in inlay over the surface, simple yet elegant, befitting the personality entombed within. Jahangir went on to add a top floor, entirely out of white marble with screens on all sides, a court which would hold the ceremonial cenotaph while the actual tomb crypt is at an accessible level today. https://www.instagram.com/p/CcKDkmvPWxd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI= -- source link
