These fashions come from an 1887 issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book, a popular women’s magazine published between 1830 and 1898. Issues included women’s and children’s fashion, recipes, fiction and non-fiction stories, sewing instructions, and advice on domestic arts.Sarah Josepha Hale, a women’s rights advocate, served as the editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book from 1837 to 1877. She used the magazine to promote women’s education by including information about colleges and college-level reading. Readership in the magazine increased under her editorship.
