BABA YAGA - the witch. My grandad would tell my mother stories, which she passed on to me and my sister, that if you ate blue vein cheese, witch Hazel would come out from under the house and hunt you down. Witches in folktales are usually mean and often cannibalistic. The interesting thing about Baba Yaga is she is ambiguous. Andreas Johns identifies Baba Yaga as “one of the most memorable and distinctive figures in eastern European folklore,” and observes that she is “enigmatic” and often exhibits “striking ambiguity.” Baba Yaga is a truly frightening character - you never know if she will help, or hinder you if you meet here in the dark forest. But I like to think (or hope) she has the heart of a grandmother underneath that wicked smile. Who’s your most frightening folktale figure? -- source link
