books0977: A young girl reading by candlelight. Philip Mercier (French, 1689/1691-1760). Oil on canvas. Amongst Mercier’s fancy pictures were a small number of candlelight subjects depicting young women at a variety of nocturnal tasks including Bon Soir, which also depicts a young girl reading a book by candlelight. The same girl appears as the model in a number of Mercier’s fancy pictures from this date, including this one, and she is identified as ‘Hannah, the artist’s maid.’ -- source link
