thefeatherscollective:Socorro dove (Zenaida graysoni)The Socorro dove is a dove species that is currently extinct in the wild, but has a buffer population of about a 150 animals in captive facilities. This buffer population is incredibly important and ensures that the Socorro dove won’t go entirely extinct and may, at some point, be reintroduced into the wild again. This bird was last sighted in 1972 from Socorro in the Revillagigedo Islands, Mexico, where it originates from. Conservation efforts that are currently on their way include establishing a breeding population in captivity, as well as eradicating feral cats and sheep from Socorro and restoring the habitat. So far, no birds have been released into the wild, but action is being taken to ensure the Socorro dove will once more be released into the wild in Socorro.
