thelisteningstationcheltenham: ‘Listening Stations’ have been popping up in-and-around Cheltenham over the weekend. They house a series of 5 postcards showing WW1 archive quotes and images from the collection at The Wilson. Alongside sketchbooks and notebooks that allow the community to interact with the project in written or drawn form. You’ll find them located at The Wilson, the Library and Leisure at Cheltenham until July. With new locations coming soon! You can find out more about where some of our quotes came from here: ‘In this new experience you may find temptations, both in wine and women. You must entirely resist both temptations, and while treating all women with perfect courtesy you should avoid intimacy. Do you duty bravely. Fear God. Honour the King’ KITCHENER, Field-Marshal ‘The world as a whole has not been at peace since 1914, and is not at peace now. The balance of war and peace in the 21st century will depend not on devising more effective mechanisms for negotiation and settlement but on internal stability and the avoidance of military conflict.’Eric Hobsbawm Even today we raise our hand against our brother… We have perfected our weapons, our conscience has fallen asleep, and we have sharpened our ideas to justify ourselves as if it were normal we continue to sow destruction, pain, death. Violence and war lead only to death.Pope Francis ‘SETTING OUT WITH LAUGHTER TO THE FRONT!’ (found within the part-work: ‘The Great War’ housed within The Wilson archive) Hard Hit, Lean Hard!
