Morning Java, at HomeWords by Kristina S. // Photography by Georgina Wong. Over the past two years, my relationship with coffee has completely changed. What started out as a resource needed to pull an all-nighter quickly turned into a necessity to start my day. From the irresistible aroma to the smooth, rich taste, I became hooked on coffee and I wouldn’t have it any other way. As my love for coffee grew, I began trying new ways to enjoy my daily dose of caffeine and discovered that you don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on various espresso machines to make a latte or a cappuccino. I hope these ideas inspire you to try a new twist on your morning cup of java. LatteA homemade latte is easy to make and contains less sugar than coffee-shop lattes. All you need to do is heat one cup of milk over the stove top (or you can microwave your milk). Once your milk is warm, pour it over half a cup of coffee. Use extracts to add decadent flavor (my favorite extracts are almond, vanilla, and coconut). Lastly, add one tablespoon of sugar or a packet of stevia to sweeten your latte.CappuccinoIf you prefer the rich taste of espresso more than a mouthful of milk, a cappuccino is the way to go. A cappuccino is distinguished by the thin layer of foam that delicately floats at the top of your mug. To achieve this foamy consistency, you’ll need to froth ½ cup of milk per cup of cappuccino. You can do this with a frothing machine for the best results, or you can do it over the stove top. All you need is a pot and a whisk. Pour half a cup of milk into a pot over low heat and immediately begin whisking. After a minute or two, you’ll probably feel a little burn in your arm, which means you’re doing a great job! As soon as the milk appears bubbly and frothy, pour it over half a cup of coffee, using the whisk to hold back the frothy top layer until the very end. Sprinkle the top of your beverage with a dash of cinnamon and enjoy!Honey & MilkEvery once in a while, I’ll enjoy a delicious cup of honey-sweetened coffee. I love the gooey, sweet taste of honey and I always feel less guilty adding honey rather than cane sugar. All you have to do is pour yourself a cup of coffee and add a splash of milk and one tablespoon of honey. Just make sure you stir the drink well, otherwise the honey will sink to the bottom of the cup.For any drink, a dollop of whipped cream and a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg can do wonders.
