ralphsmotorbike: More from Ralph Richardson’s stories about his childhood, when he lived with his mother in Shoreham-by-the-Sea, near Brighton.“My mother and I were happy together. One night I was got out of bed and told, ‘Look up, look up at the sky, Ralphie. That is a comet, you should always remember that.’ And I have always remembered Halley’s comet.“Not long after the comet I saw a king. I had an aunt who also lived at Shoreham. Once when I was visiting her she led me to the window. A way off, walking slowly along the beach were three or four smartly dressed gentlemen. My aunt had been a musical comedy star of some note in her time, I thought her very beautiful, her voice was splendid. She leant out of the window and called with an effortless ring: ‘God save the King!’ One of the gentlemen paused, he looked at the house, then he raised his top hat and gave a little bow. ‘That,’ said my aunt, ‘was King Edward VII. You might remember that.’” (From British Vogue Magazine, 1979)Nearly 40 years later, Ralph was knighted by Edward VII’s grandson, George VI. -- source link
