A bugbear is a boogeyman from English folklore. Often said to resemble a monstrous bear, it is said to lurk in the woods. It is often used by parents to frighten young children into behaving. In modern English, a “bugbear” is a pet peeve. However, the original etymology translates roughly as “frightening” or “goblin bear.” It has been integrated into the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game as a hostile goblinoid creature.
