The protests began in resistance to the Chinese government’s Communist policies and political corruption and called for economic and political reform and democracy. The government used force to end the protests, sending in tanks on the evening of June 3rd; they encountered violent resistance from the protesters. On June 4th, the tanks reached the Square and the remaining protesters agreed to leave. Thousands were killed in the few days of repression. 25 years ago -- source link
