In the Christian context of prayer, silence is synonymous with listening. A quiet mind, a feeling of peace in one’s heart or a general calm throughout one’s being are a gift to be received, however they are not, in and of themselves, the reason for, or necessarily the fruit of, deep prayer. When silence is sought as an end in itself, one can be sure that there is no genuine prayer occurring at all. However, when silence begins to initiate a deeper surrender to God because a more profound listening is occurring, prayer is not only beginning, but advancing quite rapidly. -- source link
