travismatagot: apeirophobia: BE THE COWBOY [image description: five images relating to cowboys featuring images or quotes from modern artists. first image shows lil nas x, a Black man wearing a bright pink studded leather and mesh outfit, and a matching punk hat. he is staring seriously at the camera and stands outside. in the background, there are blurry street signs, people, and palm trees.second image is a quote from orville peck that reads, “The thing that I connected with country music when I was a kid is it’s about isolation, heartbreak, disappointment. That’s the gay experience for everyone at some point. I feel like that music is written for people who feel like the minority or feel somehow alienated. Somehow the stigma got twisted around where it’s like, oh this music is for well-adjusted, straight white men or whatever. And I actually disagree. I think that it’s meant to be for people who feel like freaks.”the third image is of k.d. lang, a butch woman wearing a deep purple suit with gold embellishments resembling leaves and vines. she has short brown hair and is looking up and to the left, while holding a white cowboy hat up in her left hand almost reverently so it catches the light. her other hand is motioning towards the hat, and she stands in front of a yellow background.the fourth image is a quote from mitski that reads: I definitely wasn’t thinking about the real working cowboy that exists today. I was thinking more of the Marlboro commercial cowboy, that incredibly exaggerated myth of the western cowboy. The album title kind of came from the fact that I would always kind of jokingly say to myself, “Be the cowboy you wish to see the world,” whenever I was in a situation where maybe I was acting too much like my identity, which is wanting everyone to be happy, not thinking I’m worthy, being submissive, and not asking for more. Every time I would find myself doing exactly what the world expects of me as an Asian woman, I would turn around and tell myself “Well, what would a cowboy do?”fifth and final image is of brian firkus edited to be standing with his drag persona, trixie mattel. brian stands in a white western outfit and cowboy hat with small floral embellishments by the shoulders and bottom rim of his hat. he holds a guitar in his left hand by the neck, and his other hand rests on a wooden fence in front of him. trixie mattel rests a hand on his shoulder as she wears a pink dress with vintage western art on it. she is wearing bold makeup with start contrast and a big blonde wig. she holds an autoharp, a flat stringed instrument. they both are looking curiously out at something unseen in the distance. the background shows a flat plain with tall plants and drawn birds flying by. the photo has been edited to look older, with the colors slightly sepia toned and some areas slightly faded. end id.] -- source link
