lunetudes: day 13/21 of pooh’s dog days of summer challenge: plan your day in your target language tengo que lavar la ropa, hacer una exfoliación química en la cara, usar una exfoliante de azúcar en las manos, y lavar la ropa de cama. while waiting for my nettle tea to steep, i finished my third sociolinguistics reading: discourse analysis in newspapers. analyzing articles about the US, Britain, and France enabling an air attack on Iraq in the mid-1990s, Norman Fairclough breaks down the differences in distribution of the news from an assortment of British newspapers. a lot of metaphorical discourse was used: ‘spanking’ the leader of Iraq, because ‘he had what was coming to him’, and allowing bias into the article writing, vs reporting official news and leaving it as such. sources + media often use these patterns of discourse in tandem, so that the general public’s ideas of reported events end up skewed in a direction intended by those sources. it’s really important to hear from many different areas! -- source link
