Fun fact Friday: Did you know lake ice forms crystals that are aligned in the c-axis (think of looking down an ice crystal in the middle, which forms elongate prisms top down). This creates weakness in lake ice (hence why thick lake ice can deform easily when driving or walking on the surface). This differs from sea ice that requires a greater amount of stress to deform the crystals, which is attributed to an ununiformed rigid framework (the crystals are aligned at different angles). -- source link
