This is supposed to be part of Marliza diptych - a contrasting Eliza / Maria two-piece - which I’m working on. It explores the leitmotifs that occur and re-occur in Hamilton. In this particular instance, the theme of helplessness with the line ‘Boy you got me / Helpless’ vs. ‘Don’t leave me with him / Helpless’.) Eliza’s is the Song of Innocence (to use a William Blake metaphor) so it exudes new beginnings, first love/innocence; Maria’s will be the Song of Experience and will have darker connotations, as the line itself does. -- source link
