mindareadsoots: I find it funny that people are always surprised that pumpkin’s a girl (or at least that everyone calls her a girl. I don’t think pumpkins have genders in the literal sense). And it happens every time she shows up too. Peridot’s been calling her a girl from the very beginning, and yet whenever she appears, you see another round of “Wait, Pumpkin’s a GIRL?” posts on tumblr. Like, why wouldn’t she be a girl? Is it just because of the dogs are boys trope? I’ve noticed that in SU, the default is female. In the vast majority of popular media, the default/assumed gender for a character is male. Female is a deviation from the default - it’s seen as a character quirk, which is why so many female characters are so flat and stereotypical. Same for white, able-bodied, cis, etc. This is why in a hero team, you tend to get one girl, one person of colour, and the rest are white guys. In SU, the default is always female (or feminine pronouns) and male is a deviation! It’s such a refreshing experience. Seems kinda obvious but it’s just another lovely detail about this show. -- source link
