Today in History: Thimerosal Flu Vaccines Banned in CaliforniaOn August 26, 2004, Arnold Schwarzenegger banned flu vaccines that contained thimerosal. Thimerosal contains an ethylmercury compound. It is an antiseptic and antifungal agent that was proven effective by the Immunization Safety Review Committee of the Institute of Medicine. In vaccines, it prevents potentially deadly bacterial grown.
