nomadic-alternative: Khishortob, Tajikistan — Traces of paganism still survive in Tajikistan’s remote valleys. In one small village people invited me to an annual ritual held in a sacred grove of trees — a site probably as ancient as human habitation in the valley. The village’s oldest man and astrologist had calculated the date. In the morning people gathered. Slaughtered one white and one black goat — symbols of good and evil. Prayed.
