Silence is never comfortable. People who say that it is are lying, because their comfortable silences aren’t silences. They’re filled with the loud, powerful sounds of touch, or sight, or taste. They cuddle and hold one another, and they laugh and say they have comfortable silences. Silence is an absence of sensation. It’s that moment when the conversation has lulled for a moment, and you both stare into one another’s eyes, and one of your mouths falls open, a newborn word dying on their lips. No one knows what to say in a proper silence, no one knows how to beat it, or fill it. How could you fill it? There are so many possibilities, so many things you could say. How can you pick just one? So you don’t. And it draws out, and that pressure to say something, do something, becomes even stronger. But because of that pressure, you’re frozen. You can’t. You just can’t. That’s silence. It’s the shared pause, time continuing while two people stay in stasis, just staring. Words fail, because words are just words, and they never really got all that far anyway. And then one of you laughs, and that makes the other laugh, and then you’re both laughing and smiling and who the fuck cares that you just had that pause, that moment? Life’s too short to spend dwelling on the times where nothing was said. And so you enjoy one another and forget about it. Because the silences might not be comfortable, but everything else couldn’t be comfier. -- source link
