artaxata: Armenian Mythology - Anahid (Anahit) Referred to as “The Glory”, “The Great Queen”, “The One Born of Gold” and “The Golden Mother”, Anahid was the goddess of fertility, wisdom and water. She is known as “the benefactress of the whole human race and the mother of all knowledge”, and second only to her father Aramazd in importance. She had the most wealthy and famous sanctuary in all of ancient Armenia in the city of Erez, where kings would be required to make a yearly pilgrimage and make sacrifices during her festival of divinity. Other known centers of her worship were found in Armavir, Artashat and Ashtishat and her throne was said to be on top of a mountain in Sophene. The still celebrated festivals held during Navasard (the first month of the Armenian calendar), were originally dedicated to her. Doves and heifers were her sacred animals and the rose was associated with her as well as with her sister Astghik. -- source link
