idfonline: Whether you are Jewish, Muslim, Christian or Druze, each and every soldier has a place in the IDF. Lt. Shmueli is a member of the Military Rabbinate, his job is to make sure that every soldier has the opportunity to practice his faith’s traditions. “We don’t just make it possible for religious Jews to serve in the army, we are always working hard to make sure that all soldiers from all backgrounds can find their place in the IDF”. In the end of the basic training, the soldiers have an induction ceremony, during which they either swear or declare (if they’re atheists) their loyalty to the Israeli Defence Forces. Before my own ceremony took place, each soldier was asked whether she wants to swear in or declare, and those who wanted to swear-in were asked, which Holy Book they want to hold while swearing in. It might sound something obvious to those of you, who live in countries in which the religion is separated from the state, yet, give me a name of at least one Middle Eastern country other than Israel, where minorities not only can be treated as equals in the army but also have a freedom of religion without being afraid of practicing it even in public. -- source link
