BEHIND THE SONG: Human Nature When I wrote this one in 2013, I was trying to reconcile a major philosophical conflict that I was having at the time. I had always held the belief since childhood that human beings were inherently good, and yet, as I began navigating the world as a young adult and analyzing the news from the vantage point of my budding Black radical politics, the idea of humanity as fundamentally beautiful was contradicting with what I was seeing all around me. Drone strikes, the execution of Troy Davis, the murder of Trayvon Martin (and the exoneration of his murderer), imperialism, systemic poverty and racism, the prison industrial complex, police brutality…all of this was at odds with the fantasy of the world I wanted to have. I also felt like the mainstream Christian response to all of these current events was completely lackluster—why did there remain such a focus on one’s personal spiritual life and individual blessings when so much of our material, global reality demanded (and still demands) earthly, communal, Christ-like action? My frustration at this incongruence had completely bubbled over, and it was at that point that I began to fully understand the alliance between Evangelicalism and the systems that uphold white supremacy and capitalism (my youth had been steeped in the inculturation of the “Protestant work ethic” and I didn’t even know it!). I needed to detangle these things and the only way I knew how at the time was to just ask some questions in lyric form—which was really how the entire Backslider album came to be.
