BEHIND THE SONG: Honesty As the title might suggest, “Honesty” is quite straightforward. “Want this part of who I am and my faith to reconcile.” I wrote the lyric less than two years after coming out as a reflection on the process of becoming OKAY with ME. As I recently revisited some of this journey in the first episode of our new podcast, Outlaw’s Evidence of the Unseen (link also in my bio!), I’ve been holding the memories of this time in my life fairly close recently—I’m so grateful that all of that desperation and uncertainty is in the past. “Only YOU can show you yourself.” A personal prayer, I wanted this song to resonate with anybody struggling to find answers, be it about their sexual or gender identity or any other aspect of #deconstructingfaith. My favorite line still to this day is “Maybe if I look inside, I’ll realize the ALL of who I am is ALL that I’m supposed to be.” We all get to be completely, 100% ourselves, released from shame and feelings of unworthiness. “It hurts but it may be the only way” was a total nod to that Adam Levine/Maroon 5 song, and I apologize for nothing . Musically, I was originally thinking the production would take on a 90s adult contemporary spin, but before we started putting it all together I realized that all of that sheen might cover up the message. I wanted to leave the essence of the vulnerability of the song intact, so we decided to make the performance really barebones (no polish and *gasp* no vocal tuning). @nahitsaight designed a “crowded lounge” and I spoke my truth to a room full of people COMPLETELY ignoring the 4-minute process happening on stage. It all goes to show that magical “transformation” can happen anytime anywhere, even if nobody is paying attention.
